Nature of point defects on Si[O.sub.2]/Mo(112) thin films and their interaction with Au films
Article Abstract:
Periodic density functional theory (DFT) calculations are used to study the structure and properties of point defects at the surface of ultrathin silica films epitaxially grown on Mo(112) and their interaction with absorbed Au atoms. Apart from the peroxo group, which is unreactive, the other defects bind strongly the Au atom forming stable surface complexes, but their behavior might differ from that of the same centers generated on an unsupported silica film.

Electron paramagnetic resonance and scanning tunneling microscopy investigations on the formation of F(super +) and F(super 0) color centers on the surface of thin MgO(001) films
Article Abstract:
The formation of surface color centers (F(sub s) centers) by electron bombardment of thin MgO(001) films is investigated using electron paramagnetic resonance and low-temperature scanning tunneling microscopy. At low electron doses both techniques indicate the formation of singly occupied color centers, whereas at high electron doses the doubly occupied type is dominant.

Identification of color centers on MgO(001) thin films with scanning tunneling microscopy
Article Abstract:
An investigation of localized electronic defects on the surface of a four monolayer (ML) thin Mg(001) film deposited on Ag(001) by low-temperature scanning tunneling microscopy (STM) and spectroscopy is presented. Singly and doubly occupied color centers were identified by their specific appearances in STM images as well as spectroscopic data.
